Weekly Writing Prompts 12/13/15

With less than two weeks until Christmas, there are generally two types of people. Those that are either already done shopping and preparing (or at least close to being done), and there are those that are in full panic mode because they haven’t even started their holiday preparations. Either way, one way to get everyone into the Christmas spirit is music.

This week’s writing prompts are all about some favorite Christmas songs because music and writing often go hand in hand.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 13, 2015

SUNDAY

“White Christmas” — This classic song reminds listeners of an idyllic Christmas scene, with bright white snow covering the ground and childhood memories. For many, Christmas doesn’t feel like Christmas without snow, family sing-a-longs, and drinking hot chocolate around the tree.

For you, what images come to mind when you think of Christmas? Do you think of the snow and gathering around the fireplace, or do you prefer warmer climates with palm trees instead of pine trees?

MONDAY

“Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” — For children, and adults who are children at heart when it comes to Christmas, look forward to Santa’s arrival. They mail letters to him and leave out mild and cookies on Christmas Eve. They try to convince Santa they should be on the Nice List.

What is one thing you can’t wait for on Christmas day? Is it the presents? The food? Family traditions?

TUESDAY

“Jingle Bells” — A childhood classic that has become a staple of sing-a-longs for choirs and families alike. This song appeals to our sense of sound. The sounds of bells, whether from jingle bells on a horse-drawn sleigh or those ringing from a church steeple, make us think of Christmas.

What are your favorite sounds of Christmas? When you hear bells ringing at Christmas, what comes to mind?

WEDNESDAY

“Deck the Halls” — For some people, Christmas is all about decorations. They go all out with lights on the house and snowmen figurines all over the house. Ornaments of all kids adorn the tree. The seasonal hand towels are pulled out of storage, and nativity scenes are carefully unwrapped and set on the mantle.

When you deck your halls, what are your favorite decorations? Do you subscribe to the “bigger is better” idea or “less is more?”

THURSDAY

“O Holy Night” — This is my favorite Christmas carol. I love the imagery of the star shining over Bethlehem awaiting the birth of Jesus. The angels gather to sing throughout the heavens of the Savior’s arrival.

What is your favorite Christmas song? What is it about the song that makes it special?

FRIDAY

Nutcraker suite — The Nutcracker ballet is a staple of Christmas entertainment. Cities around the world present the ballet with professional dancers and all the way down to local ametuer performers. Most people recognize the songs from the ballet, even if they don’t necessarily know which scene the song represents.

Have you seen a live production of The Nutcracker? What is your favorite part of the ballet?

SATURDAY

“Silent Night” – This is a song sung around the world at candlelight services and beyond. The lyrics are simple, and yet reveal the powerful message of Bethlehem. The idea of sleeping in heavenly peace is a concept people long for around the world.

If you had one wish for the world at Christmas, what would it be?
